Yes, you can backup BD to external HDD in 3 steps:
1. You need tools like AnyDVD to backup BD to your PC.
2. You need to format your external HDD using fat32format to go over MS 32GB limit. You can download the fat32format from here: http://www.crapcontrol.com/content.php?article.14
3. Use multiavchd or tsMuxeR to make the backup BD to AVCHD, and save it to your external HDD.

When the Oppo 83 is reading from the 1st 4g file to the 2nd 4g file, will there be any lag?

There is no lag at all.Just like the DVD, the movie plays seamlessly (in dvd, the files are split into 1GB trunks) .That's the beauty of AVCHD.

Here is the quick comparison of MultiAVCHD and tsMuxeR:
MultiAVCHD (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/) is built around from tsMuxeR (http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer_en.html ), so MulitAVCHD has more features but takes longer to do the process.
MultiAVCHD tsMuxeR
Menu YES NO
DTS on DVD NO YES
Auto split size YES NO
Auto subtitle font size YES YES
Auto DVD charters import YES NO
Time to complete (18GB BD) 18min 10min
Tips for using MultiAVCHD:
-Turn off “Use eac3to” to disable audio conversion.
-Use PS3 mode to get menu support.
Tips for using tsMuxeR:
-To open BD.Drag the playlist .mpls file from the BD folder (\BDMV\PLAYLIST) to tsMuxR.
-Remember to save the processed “BDMV” and “CERTIFICATE” folders under a folder name “AVCHD” (all cap).

pkny hing,
Does your HDD have any partitions? Mine has one NTFS & another with Fat32. Seems like the Oppo 83 doesn't like my HDD with 2 partitions, it says "USB Error" on the LCD display.
