Any software support streaming the music files from another?
As I want to keep the file ...
chhanthony 發表於 2011-7-29 11:03

What do you mean?  You can just put the music files in a shared folder and just read them off the network...  This works whether you are using Linux, Windows, or that silly derivative of BSD.

My current setup:
- Have a dedicated file server in one of the rooms on the second floor of my house -- 4 x 2TB hard drives, running as two sets of RAID1 (mirroring) drives, i.e. total of 4TB of storage space (there's a reason to go RAID1 x 2 instead of RAID10, but that's a different discussion).
- Then I have a few sets of speakers set up
(a) In the living room on the first floor...  Have a media PC that's attached to my AV amp (via HDMI) and my TV, and it streams videos from the server.  But for music, the PC is also hooked up to a DAC via optical and the DAC is hooked up to my stereo amp and then my gigantic speakers.  Music is stream via Cat6 to the PC.
(b) In the bedroom on the second floor...  Half of my bedroom is essentially my music area...  Have a tiny PC that I built for nothing but playing music.  The PC cost me ~HK$2,000 a few months ago.  It runs on external power, with a slower but integrated processor, no optical drive, and just an SSD -- to ensure that I don't need any serious heat sinks/ fans.  It doesn't even have a monitor or mouse/keyboard.  Initially this streamed music from the server over wireless, but after I upgraded (no shxt) my router, reception becomes exceptionally poor, so I ran another Cat6 cable from my home office (where the router is) to my bedroom and it's problem-free again.  The PC is attached to my DAC via USB -- I didn't pay for the USB cable, got it off the guy who sold me the DAC.  No reason to pay anything more than a few hundred bucks for a USB cable (likewise for optical and HDMI, but that's a different discussion).
(c) In the home office on the second floor...  Have a THX-certified 5.1 system (ancient Logitech!) attached to my main PC.  I use this for music once in a while, usually when I want music when I'm working.  Am thinking about putting another DAC + amp + speakers in this room for music.
- For set up (a) and (b), I use a laptop (attached to the network through wireless) to remote login (using Remote Desktop Connection in Windows) to connect to the boxes to control them.  Obviously, set up (a) and (b) both have CD players attached to the DACs as well.

As for software, use whatever you like.  I'm a big fan of foobar2000, for no reason other than the fact that it's extremely small, very much customizable with a ridiculous number of plug-ins, and very efficient.  Paying a few hundred US$ for "professional" software that are resource hogs is just insane and people who do that have no idea how computers work.

and a good USB cable 1K+

wally 發表於 2011-7-29 11:25

You aren't going to like this comment...  But a HK$20 USB cable and HK$200 one might make a difference, but a HK$2000 one probably isn't too much better than a HK$200 one.

No problem at all, actually, may be I'm bias, I don't like USB, so, I'm still using coaxial connection from PC to DAC. But I've always been advise that if I need to use USB connection, I should budget around 1K, don't need to go to 2K level, for a better quality. But anyway, admit that I have no experience on this

But regarding to streaming and file sharing, they are different. For file streaming, you need a streaming server, which could be Anthony's room PC, translated audio/video files into a native form which player can play easily, then server push that over to the network for the player to play. Which means in this model, the player PC require lesser power, server PC controls the communication. In the file sharing model, the player PC simply pull the file off from the file sharing PC and play it off when the file are fully pulled from the file server. So, which means in this model, the player PC will require more power and may theoretically experience a longer delay. BUT, a big one, in the home network situation, since all PCs are in the same trusted network, and the network bandwidth should be more than sufficient to transfer files between PCs in a very very short period of time, so, don't suggest using the Media Streaming model, as the setup may be over complicated with little benefit. Anthony, you may only see the different if your source file is very very large and the player NB is very low end. But still suggest you to play it off the share folder 1st, if you experience some delays or interruption during playing, then you may consider use media streaming. The simplest way to stream media file is using iTune.

Oops...  Didn't notice that he wanted to "stream"...  I guess you went for the technical definition of "streaming", which is fine.

But if that's what he wants to do, it's just silly for home.  I mean, my current foobar2000 set up essentially buffers the entire file up to 60MB (which, if you use any sort of compression like FLAC, means 90% of your audio files) and the transfer rate on my network is something like 80-90MB/sec...  Go figure...  Absolutely no reason to "stream" at all.

By the way, I play my 720p video files over the network as well and I never have any problems...

You on 100Mbps or 1Gbps?  I haven't tried, but I don't think it would be a problem at all...  I can move files continuously over the network at 80-90MB/sec.

100M, but nowadays, you may not assume home network is simple and being ideal for most of the time. For me, I have 2 web cams @ home almost continuously FTPing recording to NAS. 2 or 3 PCs are always online + other handheld devices, so... I didn't check the through-put, but... anyway, in a network, lots of variations, so, I won't eliminate the need of file streaming or FTP between machines within a home network, although the chance is slim... all depends on the combination of actual situation of the user la

Sorry, Anthony, a bit off your topic.
