I have tested different connections, so far the best is laptop optical out to my CDP, probably cos it is most direct.But the sound is slightly too thin and not enough bass.

一般啦，可能我聽慣CDP，一時不慣CAS而已。 而且SOFTWARE 的 SETTING仍在學習階段。

Toslink no good it is because toslink only theoretically no signal lost "inside" the cables, however, due to need to convert the data into light, there are "tons" of signal lost from the conversion.
Direct digital output from computer very depend on the quality of the onboard sound card, but even Mac, as long as it is a home use computer, almost we can be sure, no onboard sound card in this planet is design for serious audio playback.
Therefore, USB DAC will be the only choice.
Most people think USB powered device is a bad idea, and may DIYer willing to modify any USB powered device into external powered. Yes, USB powered is not a a perfect choice, and no matter what device, even amplifier, external powered always better then internal powered, but not "perfect" not equal to "bad".
To make a USB powered device sound good is too simple for anyone who know electronics, it just need to have a USB galvanic isolation circuit will be fine, and M2tech do have galvanic isolator built-in.

小弟覺得你唔係聽唔慣 CAS，“可能”因為你個 CDP 個 DAC 同 JITTER CONTROL 做得好過 CAS 個 DAC （MF）.
同埋要留意你電腦有冇 resample 個 sample rate from 44.1kHz to 48kHz, 咁轉法實差左 D。
