So, is it a really a good idea to deal with i2s? Someone told me that there is no need a additional clock to make a accurate signal by using I2S, is it true?

Usually I don't recommand i2s not about the format of i2s but the cable, due to only the length limitation already cause you problem about gears placement, and except you can DIY the cable, otherwise order make a i2s cable from somewhere, only the labour cost may already a big matter, and when the labour cost is high, you will simply force yourself to use luxury material, finally, a over thousand DIY i2s cable at only 0.5M, which only fit current machine and without re-sell value.

true and not true about clock, true is if the gear hiend enough, the word clock of the i2s should be precesion enough, not ture is there is always better clock, only if you willing to pay or not, for example, the coming CDPRO2 CDT did re-clock the word clock of the i2s, to make sure the CDT in i2s connection no need to count on the DAC too much.

yes but may only for Northstar only, as long as the plug type have no standard, even 2 difference brands use same plug, you still not sure if the wiring pin out is same or not, finally, may still need DIY.

It is simple:
First of all, consider if you can manage your equipments placement by connection via just a 0.5M length cable, if yes, then consider the next issue, if no, you can already give up i2S.

2nd, if yes from question one, consider if you can handle and DIY an i2S cable, if yes, then simple, go ahead, if no, consider the 3rd......

3rd, make sure you willing to spend at least HK$1K for a custom tailor make 0.5M only cable, not just for i2S only, but for your current setup only, plus 100% no resell value, if you can accept it all, welcome to the world of i2s, if no, simply give up.

By the way, remeber there are always more choices of CDTs and DACs if you can forget about i2S.

AES/EBU is professional standard, therefore usually be found from at least mid-end level player/transport.

Personally I do prefer AES/EBU but most people will prefer coaxial, other then cheaper and more choices, coaxial do sound a bit more musical.
