Why do we use "cable sleeve" for speaker cable??

I brought a new pair of speaker cable and got some cable sleeve for it from SSP. However, I discover teh sleeve itself can be quite expensive, $16/ft.. (you may also get some cheaper from other shop). so for a pair of 2.5m speaker cable, just the cable sleeve will cost you over $200.

Although I spend the money quite alright, but wanna find out more from all chings what are teh major purpose for using cable sleeve.

1/ for cosmetic?
2/ for protection (mechanical or quality wise)
3/ for isolating harmful interference ? (I saw from Ko Ming that some of teh sleeve can cost up to $6X /ft, more than many speaker cable itself)
4 others reasons?

And apart from size (in diameter) does the material matter for the sleeve? some of them cost much higher than the rest.

From Ko Ming that some of teh sleeve can cost up to $6X /ft and make it by carbon fiber material which provide higher protection and higher interference isolation . Than the price so high.

e.g. If DIY a XLR cable like Oyaide 110 ohm - price $25X /ft, some people may choose the better teh sleeve for it.
