I was in exactly same situation as you couple months ago.
Looking for bookshelf around $3000 budget. Not sure how to start and sometimes feeling pressure when standing next to the salesperson in front of dozen of speakers. But after I tried couple times, some sales are actually quite friendly and willing to chat (depends on level of busy of the shop).
End up I listened KEF iQ10, Jamo, Energy, Mission, Tannoy, Wharfedale, Roger, Dali, Polk Audio...etc. Surprisingly each brand has different characteristics although is entry level bookshelf.
And I've same feeling as you that KEF just not my cup of tea if listen music primary. This is more depends on your personal favor too. Suggest really go to listen until you find a decent bookshelf.
Personally I think UK brand (of course made in China) preform better on music.
