Ah..I just think of one thing, not sure if it may help or not.
I am not using Impact but Velodyne Ultra 800
In my unit,
1/ first of all the "Auto" switch must be "on" if you want the unit to switch between "Duty/Stand-by" according to signal from the Amp. - I assume your friend has done that.
2/ When you get the unit in "working" mode, With my unit, if I switch it on at the main power switch, it will enter the "working" mode directly. However, I noted if I switch the unit to "stand-by mode" manually, then it won't switch itself into "working" mode even with the signal from the Amp.
3/ That mean, once your friend get the sub-woofer working, try to leave it even after the movie and Amp shut down, then after few mins. teh Sub-woofer should switch itself into "stand-by".
4/ Then next time when you play movie at teh Amp, the signal will kick the sub-woofer into working mode.

By the way, I always shut down my sub-woofer at the main switch after use.
