John Lennon once said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing."
For me, before Sam Hui, there was nothi ...
I couldn't agree with you more, bro... and it's a pity that the mainstream/general HK public just focuses on his funny songs/movie themes but overlooks his many other great sentimental ballads on his albums (these actually appeal to me even more) that are more sentimental and "serious" in perspectives. Many albums of such are very much underrated (such as 89歌集, 新的開始, 最喜歡你, 難忘你 etc.). Many non-hit ballads hidden in his albums often remain undiscovered, such as "需要你"(penned by himself) from the album "熱力之冠"....and you can never expect these songs to be sung in his concerts.

I grew up in HK just when Sam Hui's first Cantonese album was released....I have been a fan since then. Even after my family moved to the U.S.A in 1977, I remained a fan. The first album I bought with my own money:
Thank you for mentioning "需要你" from the album "熱力之冠"....one of favorites of his later songs. Great arrangement, with one of the best guitar solos in HK pop music.
The 3 CD version of Sam Hui's 1987 concert will be my 6th version of this title; I also have the 2 cassette version, the 2 CD version, the VHS video cassette, the laserdisc, and the DVD.
