Onkyo AV amp question

Hi,

I use a Onkyo AV amp and use 7.1 pre-out to standalone power-amp to drive speakers. I want to try bi-amp and need 2 sets of front L/R output from the AV amp pre-out.

I know the Onkyo AV amp can work in bi-amp mode (set Speaker setup to Bi-amp). Then the front L/R AND surround back L/R are used to drive front L/R speaker. BUT, I don't use AV amp buildin power-amp. I use it's 7.1 pre-out only.

My question is, if I set the AV amp to Bi-amp mode, will the surround back L/R PRE-OUT also output the same Front L/R signal (like the internal power-amp)? Or this bi-amp config only works with internal power-amp section?

I checked the standalone pre-amp Onkyo 886 manual, and the XLR pre-out does work in this way when set as bi-amp mode. But there is no mention of the RCA 7.1 pre-out on any of the Onkyo model.

Yes I understand. My setup is 5.1 so don't need surround back L/R.

I know a simple RCA Y splitter (1 in 2 out) will work but maybe there is some signal downgrade. If the Speaker Bi-amp setting will turn Surround Back L/R RCA pre-out as the same as Front L/R RCA pre-out then it's perfect for bi-amp...

The 886 does, as stated in it's manual. In bi-amp mode, the XLR Surround Back L/R becomes the same as Front L/R, for bi-amp connection. But there is no mention on the RCA pre-out.

And all (recent) Onkyo AV amp has bi-amp speaker out, which turns Surround Back L/R as another Front L/R for bi-amp connection. But there is no mention on the Surround Back L/R RCA pre-out.

I guess there may be a chance the Surround Back L/R RCA pre-out will also turn Front L/R, if the whole AV amp works in the same logical thinking!

I guess no one actually try it. I'll try and report...

I just tested the Surround Back L/R pre-out in bi-amp setup, and it's the same as Front L/R. I'll get 1 more amp for bi-amp.

Easy, use both RCA and XLR pre-out for your L & R channel...

May I confirm that you have tested and found out by setting Bi-Amp, the Onkyo will also send the L/R signal to the Surround Back L/R pre-outs! So what is needed is to use a pair of RCA to connect the Surround Back L/R pre-outs to the Power Amp on top of that for the L/R.
There would be no need for a Y-Splitter at the Onkyo L/R (1 each) preouts! Am I right?

I have same setting of Onkyo + 5 Channel Power Amp as you and am struggling between Bi-Amp or Bi-Wire (No splitter).  Thanks,
