Teac HA-P50 (Amp & DAC)

This is my first time to “open box”. Since I do not know the way to type Chinese, I have to write in English. I learned from 76 website that TEAC will launch the first portable amp & dac in March at around HK$2000 to 3000. Then I kept a close eye of it and imported it once it launched in Japan. I got it on Apr 4 and some locations in Japan still hadn’t get the product.

As this is made by Teac, the build is top notch. Strong, solid and the button push is smooth. Two cables are provided. One is purely for charging with USB plug. You can directly charge from the electricity plug / computer usb. Another cable is USB and micro ends which is used to connect the amp with computer. The size of the amp is same as the ipod touch 5 and the thcikness is 1.5 times of ipod touch which is smaller than Sony PHA-1.

The most selling point of this amp is the compatibility – you can flow signal by “line in”, “optical in”, “USB in via apple devices and Android device” and “micro usb in for window and mac computer”. However, if you use the micro usb to connect with the computer, it will get the signal and charge the amp in the same time, I feel the sound quality is affected a bit.

Now go to the most important part – sound quality. The sound signature is clean and clear. It is very transparent and not warm and cold sound. I use the ipod touch to fill to pack with the amp. With the amp, the sound likes to open a “big door”, the sound becomes very open and dynamic but not change the sound signature. I used to own the RSA, corda 2Stepdance and Alo National and A&K10.

Comparing with RSA, I like the RSA house sound a lot. It is warm and comfortable. The HA-P50 seems another way round.

Comparing with corda 2Stepdance, the sound signature is similar now. Both are clean and transparent and no add any additive to the sound. If you like Corda amp, you can try HA-P50.

Comparing with A&K10 at the similar price point, the dac and amp sections of HA-P50 wins a lot and at different level. A&K wins at the size.

The direct competitor may be the Sony PHA-1 and PHA-2. I have heard PHA-1 only and heard the Sony house sound which is the part I dislike but this may be your apple. For PHA-2, the price is nearly double of HA-P50.

At the end, I think this is a cheap jewellery and worth to introduce the head-fiers esp the price is mid 2000 something.

Thanks Hiyori Hing, I am inspired a lot by you and muffy hing sharing so I write this review. I want to provide a bit effort to the head-fi community.

The amp is really better than my expectation. I say this not because I own this. I also heard the JLab C5, ibasso PB2, filo E18 and Alo national but they are really not at the same level so I think it is worth to intorduce this.

May be I am not right. I think this may be sutiable for those earphones with strong character to balance it out like Carda 5813 (this one estremely difficult to push). For those earphone with neutral character, the mix may be too neutral like water.

Anyhow, at mid $2000, this is very high value ratio.

謝謝師兄的建議，這建議相信對本壇很多師兄都非常有參考價值，尤其想找一個相對neutral而可以配合個性不同耳機的朋友，似乎teac這機會為這個價位提供一個有力選擇，小弟也很希望可以盡快試試看。

也期待師兄可以分享手上其他玩具喔

Hi orcheung hing, nice to meet u in post76.
I have been curious about this teac portable ipod dac. Since it is using 5102 as the dac chips. The sound should not be similar to the teacs using AKM products which i dont really like. I've heard of 5102 once from luxman DA100. The sound signature is warm and detailed, also it is transparent as u mentioned.
I'm looking forward to trying the new teac ha-p50 and compare it with the upcoming JVC pordable DAC

雖然變得有點唯晶片論
但係作為Da100既用家,的確幾期待teac這次的表現呀

不過近期teac 出品唔岩我口味都係事實
