Let's see what the anger is about here.

Sony released a server with a level of protection that requires it to be used with only 4K displays made by Sony and requires every Sony display made before server release to be modified. While the division that made the decision re the level of protection imposed probably was intelligent enough to know that pre displays wouldn't work, other divisions such as panels and projectors were basically blind sided. Surely if the panel division knew, it would have delayed the release of the 55 and 65 until it had the right security stuff inside.

Re the projector, I think the projector division knew for some time that the projector would not work with the server upon release but would be enabled at some later time. I doubt they knew all the reasons why it wouldn't work. Surely they were also blind sided by the last minute level of security in the server.

Now Sony is scrambling to take care of its 4K panels. To modify the design so that new shipments have the right stuff inside and to quickly fix the ones out there. Its all tied up with big time marketing campaigns too. Speed is of the essence especially if the 4K content service is to launch soon and start earning Sony revenue.

Re the 1000ES. A fix needs to be designed, manufactured and installed in all 1000ES projectors made so far, at least for those who want to use the sony server with it and Sony movies which requiring a Sony panel or 4K projector to be watched. The projector division is tiny. Sony does not have many technicians in the field that can service a projector. They are small and easy enough to ship to a centralized repair facility although having to do this for a mod will piss off some customers for a variety of reasons.

People want to know now that a fix or modification will be made available so they can watch Sony 4K movies.. They want to know what the fix is, when it will be available, how much it will cost, if anything, the procedures to be followed, how long those procedures will take, whether Sony will pay for mounting and remounting, whether if it has to be shipped, will sony pay shipping both ways, yada yada, yada, yada. The list goes on and on and on and WE want all the answers now and they better be the right answers for everyone here if that were possible and it isn't because there are differences between many of us.

From July 3, 2013

The Anti-Piracy and Content Protection Summit in Los Angeles last week had a number of interesting speakers, not least Sony Pictures CTO Spencer Stephens. With Sony just confirming that its new 4K player will debut in weeks, Stephens has revealed his wish-list for future 4K content protection. In addition to watermarking files with the identity of the user, the Sony CTO says that 4K players should have an Internet connection in order authenticate each video playback.

Earlier this year, Sony announced its new FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player in preparation for bringing the highest quality video available into homes around the world. 4K video will bring a resolution of 3840 × 2160 to the market, with the 4K referencing the almost-4000 pixel horizontal resolution.

Just this week Sony confirmed that its new device, which is only compatible with Sony’s own 4K TVs, will be arriving in homes from July 15th . Priced at $699, the player will require activation via the 4KActivation.com website.

Sony also named its new online 4K content distribution service which is due to launch later in the year. Video Unlimited 4K will offer movies and TV shows for direct download to its 4K player.

How the studios intend to protect their 4K content from piracy going forward has not been publicly outlined. However, during last week’s Anti-Piracy and Content Protection Summit in Los Angeles, Sony Pictures CTO Spencer Stephens gave a presentation which included his company’s wish-list for 4K DRM.

Bill Rosenblatt, who spoke at the summit for his company GiantSteps Media, notes that Stephens described the introduction of 4K as an opportunity to start with a fresh anti-piracy design. This, along with Sony’s “wish-list”, suggests that the final approach is yet to be agreed.

Nevertheless, at this stage Sony appears to be clear on its DRM requirements. Although fairly predictable, they aren’t going to win them many fans.

After the infamous cracking of HDCP, Sony is backing HDCP 2.2 * to protect the digital outputs of its devices from unauthorized video capture. HDCP 2.2 also has a ‘localization‘ feature, which limits the distance over which an HDCP player will feed content to a receiver such as a TV. This should stop people playing HDCP-protected content over the Internet.

Next, Sony wants each video title to be unique, meaning that the cracking of one piece of content doesn’t open up the floodgates to everything else. The company also wants video playback to take place in a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), ensuring that sensitive data is processed and protected in a secure manner while allowing software upgrades.

And now the intrusive stuff.

Sony says it wants 4K content to be watermarked with the identity of the device or user who downloaded it, meaning that should the above countermeasures become cracked at some point, it will be possible to trace content back to its original owner. It won’t necessarily follow that those individuals are responsible for any ‘leak’ but they could forever associated with that content if it should.

Of particular interest given all the fuss over Xbox One’s former requirement to be connected to the Internet on a daily basis (and Sony’s response of needing no such thing for PS4), is Sony’s final wish-list item for 4K.

If the company has its way, all 4K players will need to authenticate themselves online before each and every playback. This will enable content providers to identify both unauthorized content and hacked players. However, if you are a legitimate customer with no Internet connection – permanently or temporarily – content will not play on your 4K device.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that content providers are viewing the Internet as a means to remain in constant contact with ‘their’ hardware and content wherever it may be. Going forward that will provide an unprecedented level of control. At least, that’s the plan.

EDIT: If you click on the pdf link for the HDCP 2.2 above you will find the requirements for the Authentication Protocal, Authentication and Key Exchange, Pairing, and Locality Check.  Just guessing but I expect this is part of the hardware that is missing in your projectors.  Looks like the encription/decrypting process will require internet connection to obtain a key.  Then you have watermarking or what ever else Sony wants to do.

4K Video Format Finally Has a Content Source in Sony’s FMP-X1 Media Player

By Michael Heiss July 3,2013

To start, the FMP-X1 is only compatible with the two most recent Sony 55- and 65-inch XBR x900A models. Hook it up to anything else, even Sony’s own 4K-native VPL-VW1000ES projector or the 84-inch flat-panel set, and it simply won’t work. Sony reminds us that there is a different server bundled with the XBR-84X900, but if the display is anything other than the two X900A models, then you are just out of luck.

In terms of content acquisition, storage, and control, be reminded that this is a Sony-specific product only presumably using the eyeIO codec, although it is possible that others might be useable at a future date. It is also a “download and store-only” product and service. Content is not streamed, but downloaded to the internal 2TB hard drive, so expect it to take about nine hours to download any new content not already on the drive. A rear-panel USB connection is available to connect additional hard drive storage and there is also a USB 3.0 port on the front surface.

...................As for the question of the installation, itself. Clearly any custom firm that will provision this sort of product will need to be there to do some of the physical and other connections, but be forewarned that Sony is requiring that “in-home premium activation” be performed by them, presumably through third parties who have received the requisite training. If that is NOT you, and that is likely to be the case, you have no choice but to schedule the installation with this additional outside firm. Precise details on what this “activation” involves were not available at press time.

With all of the caveats aside, including the use of this 4K content server currently being restricted to not just one brand’s displays, but to specific models only within their product line, the availability of the FMP-X1 this month is an important step forward for 4K/UHDTV. Again, while somewhat limited on both content availability and device compatibility, it certainly does answer those who claim that 4K is a format in search of content. This is only the first of what one can expect of many such devices to come as time moves forward. With Sony leading the charge here as a proof-point on 4K content distribution it is a safe bet that other and more open services and devices from the likes of Netflix and others are going to follow sooner than later.

Sony the competition is getting tougher

Just posted in a Press Release by Samsung with the release of their new F9000 55, 65 and their 85 inch UHD panels to dealers.

"Samsung promises future-proof performance with its exclusive Evolution Kit with interconnect permitting next generation HDMI connection as well as HEVC 4K codec capability allowing purchasers to keep up with improvements to UHD as new features become standardized and implemented."

My name is Dave and I work for the Home Entertainment and Sound Group at Sony. I have worked in the Home Audio and Video group for over 8 years and have worked very closely with Amy, the past product manager for projectors at Sony. I do support Projectors and want to officially communicate to all of you what I can. I cannot commit to maintaining a full dialog with this forum so please understand that I may not be taking questions or replying.

Before I make any official statement, I want to thank you for your purchase of what I think is an amazing product and your support and appreciation of the product is noticed and very much valued. I have long been reading your comments and am aware of the confusion around the FMP-X1 4K Media Player and the VPL-VW1000ES. We are still working on our plans and will announce when we have all the pieces in place. All of that being said, I am sure you want to know Sony’s official policy about a 4K Media Player working with your VPL-VW1000ES projector, so here it goes:

"Thank you for your comments. As a valued customer, we want to respond directly. As you know, the VPL-VW1000ES projector was designed based on the industry standards in existence at that time. Still cutting edge, the VPL-VW1000ES displays both unsecured 4K video and upscales HD video to an amazing image.

The new Sony FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD media player is the only device that provides native 4K movies and TV programming to customers, and uses the latest industry standards to deliver content securely. While our newest 4K Ultra HD televisions incorporate these standards, earlier products such as the VPL-VW1000ES will require an update.

Please be assured Sony will meet your expectations to provide a path for you to enjoy 4K content from a media player compatible with the VPL-VW1000ES. Details of our program to work with a 4K media player will be announced and implemented as the Video Unlimited 4K download service is finalized and launched later this summer."

I also wanted to offer to any of you that may be going to CEDIA the opportunity to come to the Sony Booth and introduce yourself to us. I do look forward to meeting some of you. Thank you for your time and we will communicate again when we have more details to share.

Surgery was a success here. It was this pair of tech's first go-round.

Remove back, insert board, close tv, update software, plug in X1, update player, play.
