頭amp呀幫主...guitar wise...個頭好重要...個cab....我不嬲都係無理...因為，頭amp都係由一大堆野放去佢度。不過轉左jcm 900去fender chrous 就死到呀媽都唔認得.......{:9_418:}

What's the difference between a "preamp" and an "amp head"?

The very simple answer is that a preamp is just for tone and an amp head is a preamp + a power amp in one box, so it can shape tone and power speakers without needing two boxes.

The more detailed answer is that the signal coming out of your guitar is very small.... very low voltage (millivolts), and essentially no power (zero wattage). We call this signal "instrument level", btw.

To move a speaker, we need more voltage and more power. First, we use a preamp to increase the voltage from "instrument level" to "line level", which is usually a few volts (but still no wattage!).

Second, we need to add power - so we have a power amp which adds wattage. When it leaves the power amp, the signal is now known as being "speaker level", having both appropriate voltage and wattage.

So...

guitar -> preamp -> power amp -> speakers

ie

instrument level -> line level -> speaker level

So, with that in mind, a preamp is for turning an instrument level signal into line level. Often, though, the term "preamp" is also used for effects that shape tone, ie, add effects, distortion, amp modeling, etc.

A head = preamp + power amp.

To answer your second question, if you want to power speakers, you need a power amp. If you have an amp head, you technically have everything you need. If you want a different tone, you may want another preamp.... or pedals, multifx, etc.

To put it a different way, you need a power amp. So, you could either buy a head that has both the preamp and power amp sections, or you could buy a power amp and preamp separately.
