i = interlace
p = progressive
Interlace means each display frame is broken into 2 fields to display - one consists of all the odd# display lines (i.e. line #1, #3, #5, ...); and the other consists of all the even# display lines.Interlace is the old technology - it is only valid for the CRT TV, in which the TV can only display the odd field and the even field separately, but not at the same time.
For nowaday's flat panel digital TV, no matter it is plasma or LCD, it is ALWAYS a progressive display - meaning it displays all the 1080 lines of a frame at the same time (not breaking up a frame into odd field and even field).If the digital TV receives an interlace signal (e.g. DVD @ 540i, HDTV broadcast @ 1080i, or blu-ray concert @ 1080i), it will (and it must) convert it into a progressive one ("de-interlacing") before it can display.Depending on the quality of the video processor, de-interlacing may introduce undesirable side effect which makes the image looks worse.So if the video source is 1080p native (e.g. most of the blu-ray movies), and your TV is able to receive 1080p signal (most of the older 1366x768 TVs do not support 1080p input), you're better stick to 1080p to avoid unnecessary conversion.
