Many magnetic tapes made after the 1970s will develop something called the sticky-shed syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky-shed_syndrome), making them unplayable. They need to be baked in strictly controlled temperature/humidity before they could be restored temporarily for playing. If they're played without any treatment, the magnetic coating may fall out (甩磁粉) thus damaging the tape forever.
I've heard that Polygram/Universal did bake their master tapes for new transfers. Some tracks of some of their recent Teresa Teng releases were indeed made from master tapes and they sounded brilliant. Not sure if other labels would have the budget (or willing to invest the money) to have this professional service done to their precious tapes for better sound. If their tapes would sticky-shed and they do not bake their tapes, they cannot use the master tapes and must use CD or LP instead!

Maybe some companies are not even willing to pay the 零頭...... I've heard some CDs of Teresa Teng's early songs that have serious drop-outs and distortion... I don't think the tape can be played back perfectly again......
如果有地方同器材 ，又唔怕我已經out咗，就到時間我又有乜所謂呢... ...
