According to this interview, when Patrick Read Johnson was still attached as the director of Dragonheart, Jerry Goldsmithpersonally asked for the job.

Jerry Goldsmith, my favorite composer, shows up at my office. Heknocked on my door, my office! He sits down with the script in his handand says,"Mr. Johnson, I don't have to beg for work in this town. I've got morework than I'll ever need, but now I'm going to beg you to let me dothismovie." I almost burst into tears. It was just too much. I said, "Mr.Goldsmith, I would have come to you on my hands and knees when we werereadyto go, and the minute they let me make this movie, you're it! Icouldn't be happier."

Unfortunately, when Johnson got dumped, we lost what I think would have been one hell of a Goldsmith score.
