Not just 日本....it's was one of the world's first.
On October 1, 1982, Japan CBS/Sony released the first 50 CD titles available to regular consumers anywhere in the world.Billy Joel's "52nd Street", catalog number 35DP 1, was one of the first CDs.That was the reason why it has the number "1" in its catalog number.There were 4 other CDs with the "1" in their catalog numbers released on that date.In case you wanted to know, the 35 in the catalog number means the price of the CD was 3,500 yen.

Billy Joel has many more hits after "Greatest Hits Volume I and II", but he hasn't released a pop music album in almost 20 years.
