if ding hing doesn't mind 50-85mm range,
do give it a try for the A16, no regret for such money.
It's sharp, light weight, cheap (compare to others 2.8 aperture standard zoom)
the only disadvantage i could think of is the noise (but it's acceptable)
canon's 18-55 (or 17-55) 2.8 is definitely nice, but considering the price is 6-7k, if ding hing is demanding image quality and will stick to apsc cameras for some period of time, then the canon one will suit you very nicely with daily shooting purpose.
Whereas primes, it's a different thing, i think for a good start, get a decent standard zoom lens, stick with the 55-250 for tele photos, perhaps a ultra wide lens for landscape & holiday vacation use.
Primes, very personal, you either find it very good image quality and will love all the primes...
or find it very inconvenient and might well just stick to 1 to 2 primes lens, e.g. 35/50/85...
it's a matter of what you will capture most of the time.
