DC Power Supply Problem

Just bought a DC power supply with EI transformer inside, adjustable 0-30v and 0.5-5A for my Magic TV MTV5000 (12V and 4A as stated in the orginal electronic transformer).

Owing to inadequate electricity knowledage, I don't know how to adjust the DC power supply with 12V and 4A; i.e. when 4A is adjusted, the voltage meter cannot be adjustedand vice versa.I have the MTV burned inside somehow (burning smell and no power signal eventually even I changed back to the original electronic transformer).

Can brothers here teach me how to adjust the DC power supply with both 12V and 4A?

The manual of DC power supply states that to set the current, connect the + and - terminals by a thick lead wire ( do I need to connect both wires together as a short circuit wire?), slowly turn the current adjustment knob and set the current.At this time, set the voltage adjustment knob full counter clockwise.After setting a limiting current, remove the short-circuit wire and then set the voltage to required level.

I suppose the DC requirement for MTV5000 is 12V and 4A (as stated in original electronic transformer).If not, please advise.

I suppose that I need to sent both the 4A and 12V first with the two short-circuit wires and that apply the setting to the MTV 5000 afterward.Please advise.
