Dolby Surround and DTS:Neural:X are the latest generation up-mixing processors to land in 2015+ AVRs, offering not only surround performance upgrades for stereo and 5.1 mixes, but also height channel atmospherics for stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 mixes. It's worth noting Dolby Surround is much more ubiquitous at this point, while DTS:Neural:X and DTS:X are only available on some Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha models. Pioneer, Onkyo, and Sony AVRs, I believe, are still awaiting firmware upgrades and/or new model launches. The details are a little fuzzy.
Adding to the complexity is the way different AVR manufacturers handle each up-mixer. For example, on Denon and Marantz AVRs with dual up-mixing format capability, Dolby Surround is only available for PCM and Dolby codecs, while DTS:Neural:X is locked to PCM and DTS codecs. If my memory serves, I don't have one on hand at the moment, Yamaha offers owners the choice, regardless of source encoding. I'm not sure on the other brands, but I'll be sure to follow as I get my hands on more gear.
