The theory is that CD ripping is a kind of bit copying and encoding action. As long as you can read the bit stream on the CD 100% correctly, the resulting file would contain identical digital data. The "100% correct" can be done by error detection and correction mechanism.
I think the hardware and electricity stability does really matter for the case of audio playback, due to its real time D-to-A processing nature. But for CD ripping, I think the "100% correct" theory is right.
