"Firmware 1.37 and the 05/51FD
The Good
Massive improvement with the T2 disc. No more 30+ second lag times. Menu very responsive with a split second delay after you hit the botton on the remote. Menu responsiveness overall is improved, faster and now is smoother and not choppy and intermittent as it was before. Sluggish menu discs like Die Hard 1-3 are quite a bit faster now. So with the exception of a few titles explained below the Pioneer player is finally on par with other players on the market concerning player responsiveness and menu navigation.
Load times on BD-J heavy titles improved.
Load times 1.32 vs. 1.37
T2 8 min flat vs. 3 min 40 sec
Sin City 3 min 53 sec vs. 2 min 27 sec
Firefly disc 3 3 min 10 sec vs. 2 min 46 sec
Casino Royale CE 1 min 32 sec vs. 1 min 15 sec
Pirates 1 1 min 7 sec vs. 1 min 2 sec to Disney splash
The Bad
No improvement on the dvd layer switch.
No drop in the on from off times as experienced by the 23/320FD users which went down to 19 seconds from 27. These players both use the same chip so this should easily be doable.
Little improvement in the menu navigation of Planet Terror and Death Proof. So it takes 20 seconds to pop the menu screen up and scrolling scene to scene takes 20-25 seconds. Other player do this instantly. I thought since this is supposed to be the optimization firmware this would for sure be fixed. Pioneer has proven me wrong once again! Bottom line this is unacceptable from any manufacturer.
The Ugly
On from off times have increased to 34 seconds. We are now 19 seconds over Pioneer's advertised eject from off times. Chris gave these figures to both gizmodo and engadget in preliminary advertising so both of the different websites didn't mistake what he said and come up with identical data.
Wish List
Improved disc recognition. CD, DVD, Bluray- It takes way too long for this player to figure out what type of disc is playing and load times suffer in result. Bottom Line it shoudn't take 30+ seconds to load a dvd, end of story!
Instant startup mode as on the BDP-120, farfetched but might get us to the advertised 14 second start up times.
Improved eject from off as the 23FD users experienced with the new firmware.
Firmware updates faster than every 4 months. Hopefully next FW 1.4X before Xmas."
