from my point of view and experience, a normal av-amp or integrated amp both pre-amp and power-amp share one transformer, for av-amp the processor also share the same transformer, so you shouldn't expect an all-in-one under normal circumstances better than separate unless the all-in-one has an ultra good design and parts inside.
but for the same amount of money, one goes into one case and the other have to spare the resources to 2 cases.this is why if you are going for budget machine, all-in-one.if you can afford more, separate.
for the case you have mentioned, the processor and pre-amp sides might work properly as they don't draw much current but the poweramp side.....it shows the weak side of the poweramp side
