Is it "necessary" to use HiFi to listen to music? Or you're okay to use radio to listen to music?
"necessary" or not depends on your need.
But in terms of make it sound, then yes, its not necessary.

To me, connecting to Hi-Fi is necessary.

I have the same experience, I use iTunes, USB to optical convertor, optical-in to dac.I foundthat:
隻歌resolution /file size 大啲，疾嘅機會大啲
剛剛開電腦就聽歌，疾嘅機會大啲
我部notebook冇i5咁勁，我還以為原因係我用internal HDD存歌，而當有program喺背後運行，同一HDD就會疾。
我重諗住可以用external HDD存歌就解決到
