故事根據 Mara Leveritt 的同名小說改編，源自“西孟菲斯三人幫”的真實事件。即1993年美國阿肯色州一起駭人聽聞的謀殺案背後的故事：1993年5月5日晩，阿肯色州西孟菲斯一個小鎮的3名8歲男孩失踪，3名“不良青年” ( Damien Wayne Echols、Jessie Loyd Misskelley 以及Charles Jason Baldwin )被認定為嫌疑犯，並被關押18年之久。2011年8月，在18年的牢獄生活後，“西孟菲斯三人幫”被釋放。
