I'm not an expert on Genesis.I started listening to Genesis in the 80s because Phil Collins was the band's drummer, and slowly working backwards into their catalog.
To me, the Peter Gabriel "version" of Genesis is completely different from the later Phil Collins "version".Some people don't listen to the Phil Collins "version" of Genesis because the band started to make more pop sounding music, leaving behind its progressive rock roots.Phil Collins' love of R 'n B entered into Genesis' sound....for example, the use of the horn players from R 'n B band Earth Wind & Fire.But the progressive rock roots still showed up even on the albums "Invisible Touch" and "We Can't Dance".At the same time, Peter Gabriel and ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett (with his band, GTR) both made pop sounding music, and have hits, in the 80s....
