DSD processing/Direct mode, What does it mean?
I want to buy a second hand AV amp Onkyo TX-SR875. In Spec., one of item showed that "DSD Processing/Direct mode". What does it mean? Does it mean the function of "DSD decode" by 875?I have BDP-S370, Can SR875 decode the DSD signal from the output of S370 through HDMI cable?
Thanks in advance!! Yes, it means it can decode DSD with/without processing. 回復 2# jackt
Thanks jackt! I also found another model TX-SR876, "direct/pure mode".what does it means? Can SR876 decode DSD signal? 回復 3# jasonto2000
"Direct Mode" will decode DSD directly without any processing. "Pure Mode" is a "Direct Mode" with turning off video part, also known as "Pure Direct Mode"; i.e. turn off everything except audio path. By the way, I found from the user manual on page 87 that the av amp will convert the DSD stream to PCM before processing. Which is meant that the DAC of SR876 only processes PCM and converts DSD to PCM while handling SA-CD data from HDMI input. So it supposes to use the internal DSD->PCM processing of disc player rather than the av amp.
For the different modes of the av amp, they should be:
Stereo Mode: Player -> HDMI(DSD) -> AVAMP[(DSD -> PCM) -> DSP -> DAC](Video On) -> Speakers
Direct Mode: Player -> HDMI(DSD) -> AVAMP[(DSD -> PCM) -> DAC](Video On) -> Speakers
Pure Direct Mode: Player -> HDMI(DSD) -> AVAMP[(DSD -> PCM) -> DAC](Video Off) -> Speakers 回復 4# jackt
So, is SR876 capable to decode DSD signal from my SACD player (BDB-S370)? As my understanding my BDP can output DSD Multi-channel signal through HDMI instead of PCM signal. Thanks in advance! 回復 4# jackt
One more question, Why did you prefer player decode DSD to PCM rather than AV amp?Does it depend on the chip set of DSP processor?Please let me ask foolish question, PCM is also digital code, there should be no difference for player decode or AV amp decode? Yes, SR876 can decode DSD from your S370. Secondly, the Onkyo manual tells that the PCM from SACD player will have better sound instead of conversion inside the SR876. Both PCM and DSD are digital encoding format. PCM is used commonly on most systems, including CD format and recording system . SA-CD's DSD is a propriety format by Sony. They are different since SACD has higher resolution than the CD. Most systems, including AV Amp, could not directly process the DSD stream, they will convert it into PCM first. It is because most of the algorithms (programs for DSP) are made for PCM only.
Someone likes to play DSD audio without any processing or conversion; but another likes to make conversion before playing the audio. No right or wrong, it depends on the which is good for you. If your player can make the conversion good, make it done for you. If your AV Amp can do it better with advanced processing, make the AV Amp decode for you. No one can tell you the difference but only yourself. Practically, I do prefer my PR5509 as DSD decoder in my multi-channel SA-CD performance. It gave me Audyssey room correction that I use in everyday listening. 回復 7# jackt
Thanks, jackt!! I have other question out of this topic.First, I found that in Onkyo Receiver series, most of AV amps have THX cert. Can we utilize it if my BD player and BD disc without THX cert.? Secondly, in Onkyo AV amp series, what is the big difference of series TX-SRXXX, TX-NRXXX? Actually, I found TX-SR876 and TX-NR1007 in 2nd hand market and I would like to know more about the difference of two series.Of course, NR1007 is 9.1 channel and SR876 is 7.1 channel.
In addition, any other suggestion for models with similar spec. in 1st hand or 2nd hand.My budget is ~$5000 - $6000. 回復 8# jasonto2000
Actually, I have no suggestion for your selection. I think, at least, you must understand what you need for yourself. An AV Amp is easily chosen by its features. Most companies will rank their AV Amps with different features. Each brand will have its own style on sound. In the AV Amp world, more features means more expensive and new generation will have more features. So it depends on what you needed. Write down the functions that you needed; e.g. 7.1 or 9.2, power output, video processing and room EQ. THX is just a logo and sound tuning inside the AV Amp DSP. However, you should ask yourself some questions. Do you need a brand new Amp? Will you upgrade your Amp very soon? Do you have enough budget? Do you understand your room environment? Then you can see more posts inside post76 forum about the characters of your desired Amp. Finally, it is an important thing to do, that is, to have serious listening with your own favorite materials.
Hope this information can help you.
